May a California lawyer ethically represent a client in respect to a medical marijuana enterprise in California?

BASF Legal Ethics Committee Issues Legal Ethics Opinion

Recognizing the conundrum that conflicting state and federal laws create in California in light of the Compassionate Use Act, The Bar Association of San Francisco Legal Ethics Committee composed the first bar association opinion on ethical considerations for California attorneys when advising clients concerning marijuana-related enterprises.

Special thanks to Jerry Sapiro, Sarah Banola, Al Boro, Mike Starkey, Vadim Sidelnikov, Bill Balin, Drew Dilworth, David Wolf, Jonathan Arons, Bob Cross, Kevin Sullivan, BASF Board Member Merri Baldwin, and others for their comments and diligence in getting the opinion in shape for the BASF Board’s unanimous approval on June 17, 2015.
